Well, it’s that time of year. The hustle and bustle of the Holiday Season has passed. The endless supply of sweets at the office are beginning to diminish along with my waistline. Yoga pants have held center stage in my wardrobe the last couple of weeks and not because they’ve seen a yoga mat!

Most of us have had our fill of delicious foods, yummy treats and perhaps a glass of champagne or two. Many of us, if you are like me, are ready to get back on track. Ready to kick the sugar habit, nurture our bodies, sweat out that last glass of vino and get back into our skinny jeans! Comfortably of course, without having to lay down on the floor to zip them up and then hold our breath until we take them off again! Although, it must be said that skinny jeans or no skinny jeans, yoga pants will always hold a near and dear place in my heart and in my closet.

So, as we move into the New Year we set goals, we make a plan, we resolve ourselves to any number of things. I can hear the words now. I am going to …

  • lose 10 pounds
  • drink more water
  • get to the gym every day
  • write 2 blog articles per week
  • run a marathon … well this last one wasn’t really me but you get the picture 🙂

Does any of this sound familiar? I don’t know about you but I can’t tell you how many times I have made a resolution and within days (or sometimes even hours) the resolution flies right out of the window, seemingly out of reach and not just on New Year’s Day.

So, what’s up with that? We resolve ourselves as if there was something wrong with us that needs to be fixed. We make promises to ourselves that we don’t keep. We are creatures of comfort and making changes is not comfortable. But what if it could be different? What if we could Reframe Our Resolution into something more inspiring? Let’s take a look at 3 ways we can reframe are thinking and get the results we want!

You are perfect how you are

Yes, that is right. You are perfect exactly how you are. You don’t need to lose weight, run a marathon or even put on make-up today! You are a beautiful and an inspiring person just as you are. You may choose to make some changes in your life or in your health but you don’t need to fix anything. There is nothing wrong with who you are today in this body.

Love your body as it is right now at this moment. Appreciate and give thanks for your strength, your health, your vitality. Respect your body so much that you can’t wait to nurture it. Think of your body and care for it as if it were a child. There is a small child inside you and you want to nourish that child. Feed, hydrate, rest and move in a way that respects who you are because who you are is perfect and beautiful right here, right now.

You are important

If you made a promise to your best friend, would you keep it? Of course you would, but why? Because your friend is important! You value her.  You would move mountains to keep your word with her. You can’t imagine letting her down. Well friend, you are just as important.

Think of yourself as you would your best friend. Each time we make a promise to ourselves and then break that promise, it takes a little bit of our soul. We feel just as guilty and disappointed as we would have, had we broken a promise to a friend. Have as much love and respect for yourself as you would for that friend and keep your word. When tempted to sleep in and skip your morning workout, think “Would I let my friend down and not show up?”. When you are tempted to tear into that bag of cookies ask, “Would I hand my friend this bag of cookies?” Would you say to her, “Here you go friend, why don’t you eat the entire bag?” Probably not. You would keep your word and support her.  So, support yourself just as you would your friend. Stay true to you and to what you want. Be kind and supportive. Keep your word. You are that important.

Be comfortable

Yes, it can be uncomfortable to make changes. But it can also be new and exciting. A new job, a new home or a new car can all be uncomfortable but they are also exciting. They become comfortable in time with ownership. When you start out in that new job you have a lot to learn but eventually you know exactly what you need to do each day. You become comfortable in your position and you “own” it. It’s YOUR job and YOU rock it.

When you buy a new car, it takes time to get to know it; to learn it’s shape and it’s curves; to learn how it drives. In this time, you care for your car. You wash it carefully. You park it in the best parking spots to avoid door dings. You love it and in time you become comfortable with it. Driving it becomes automatic. You know exactly where the wipers are and the radio is set to your favorite station.  Oops! I mean your phone pairs automatically when you start the engine. It is now YOUR car! It takes time to become comfortable in a new routine but it can also be exciting. Be in the moment of that excitement and enjoy the journey.

During this time of making changes in your life remember you are perfect how you are and do not need to be fixed. You are important and worth keeping your promise to. Take time to get comfortable with the changes you desire. Be kind to yourself during this time. Care for yourself, nurture yourself and soon you will be very comfortable as you ROCK the new you.

You got this!

Love and Happy New Year
