With the holidays just around the corner, I am often asked, “How can I enjoy the all of the holiday celebrations without getting off track or feeling deprived?” Whether you’re celebrating Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah, or Kwanza, chances are there are going to be some gatherings to attend and some temptations to arise.
Perhaps in years past, you’ve resigned yourself to let it all go and eat every Christmas cookie, piece of fudge, or gingerbread latte that presents itself to you. After all you’ve worked hard all year and you deserve to enjoy life a little right? Or, you’ve got a touch of Eeyore, (you know Winnie the Pooh’s friend) and you think what does it matter … I’m probably going to gain weight or fall off my protocol any how so why even try.
But what if told you it doesn’t have to be a ‘let it all go’ or ‘we’ll never see tomorrow’ way of thinking? What if I told you that you just need a few tricks up your ugly Christmas sweater sleeve that will make it possible to have your cookie and eat it too?
Ok, I might be getting a little carried away with the holiday-isms but my friend with these tips you will be able to enjoy the connection of family and friends and indulge in a little holiday goodness while still feeling great!

So, with all of the temptations coming our way, let’s take a look at a few things you can do to avoid some common pitfalls.
9 Tips to Eat Good and Feel Great for the Holidays
Follow The 90/10 Rule – Remember that what you do 90 percent of the time matters more than what you do 10% of the time. Stay on track and keep most of your meals the same as you normally would. Then indulge a bit and enjoy the party or family gathering when the time comes.
Eat Balanced Meals – Include protein, a serving or two of vegetables and healthy fat at every meal to keep blood sugar balanced and cravings at bay.
Stay Hydrated – As we move into winter, sometimes we forget to drink plenty of water. Yet the dryness of indoor heat pulls water from your body often leaving us with dry skin and lips. But these are just external signs that you need more water. When our skin and lips are dry, it’s an indicator that we are very dehydrated. Cravings for sugar and sweets is also a sign of dehydration. Shoot for a minimum of 80 ounces per day to help keep you well hydrated and reduce sugar cravings.
Eat Before Parties – If you know you are going to be tempted to overeat foods that don’t support your health, eat a balanced meal with protein before you head out the door. Then at the party you can enjoy a smaller portion or simply skip the food and enjoy connecting with friends
Scan The Spread – Before you begin to fill your plate, scan the table for healthy options and choose wisely. Choose protein, roasted vegetables, and greens to fill your plate. Select a smaller portion of fun foods like dips, crackers, and cheeses if desired.
Soup or Salad – Start your meal with soup or salad. These are often nutritious and low-calorie courses that help prevent overeating.
Watch The Alcohol – It’s ok to have a cocktail or glass of wine if desired just don’t overdo it. Alcohol contains empty calories that can pack extra weight on quick. It can disrupt a good night sleep and puts a heavier load on the liver to detoxify your system. If you desire to drink, avoid sugary mixes and look for clean options like using club soda with a squeeze of lemon or lime as a mixer. You could also volunteer to be the designated driver that night and enjoy the party alcohol free.
Stay Active – It can be challenging to stay active in bad weather but daily activity whether it be going for a walk between rain showers or getting to the gym for a solid sweat helps burn calories, flush toxins, and produces endorphins to ward off any winter time blues.
Last but not least, Enjoy! – Enjoy time with your family and friends, enjoy indulging in a few guilty pleasures, and enjoy your holiday season.
I wish you the happiest and healthiest holiday season, my friend!
