Let’s be honest—putting on a swimsuit can bring up a lot of emotions.
If you’re a woman over 40, you may be wondering why does your body suddenly feels puffier, your favorite shorts are fitting a little tighter, or the weight that used to come off easily just won’t budge anymore.
The good news? You don’t need an extreme cleanse or a crash diet to start feeling better.
In fact, some of the fastest changes happen when you reduce inflammation, balance your blood sugar, and help your body release excess water. Many of my clients tell me they feel leaner, more energized, and more confident within just a few days of making a handful of simple changes.
Here are five strategies that can help you feel your best this summer.
Prioritize Protein at Every Meal
If I could recommend just one thing, it would be this: make protein the foundation of every meal.
Whether it’s eggs for breakfast, grilled chicken on a salad, salmon with roasted vegetables, or a burger patty alongside a generous serving of veggies, protein should take center stage.
Why?
Protein helps stabilize blood sugar, keeps you satisfied longer, supports lean muscle, and naturally reduces cravings for sweets and processed foods. It’s also one of the most important nutrients for women in perimenopause and menopause as hormones and metabolism begin to change.
Aim for 25 to 30 grams of quality protein with each meal.
Reduce or Eliminate Processed Foods—Especially Refined Carbohydrates
If you’re hoping to feel leaner quickly, one of the easiest changes you can make is cutting back on processed carbohydrates like bread, pasta, crackers, cookies, chips, pastries, and sugary treats.
Here’s something many people don’t realize: carbohydrates are stored in the body along with water. For every 1 gram of stored carbohydrate (glycogen), your body also retains 3 to 4 grams of water. This extra water can lead to water retention and leave you feeling bloated and puffy.
When you replace processed carbs with protein, healthy fats, and vegetables, your body naturally lets go of some of that stored water. That’s why many women notice less bloating and puffiness and feel lighter within just a few days.
Hydrate Like A Boss!
One of the simplest ways to improve how you look and feel is to drink enough water.
My general recommendation is to aim for half your body weight in ounces each day. For example, if you weigh 160 pounds, try to drink about 80 ounces of water daily.
If you’re spending time outside, exercising, or sweating more during the summer months, you’ll likely need even more.
I also recommend adding electrolytes to your routine. One of my favorites is LMNT, which provides sodium, potassium, and magnesium without added sugar. Electrolytes help your body absorb and utilize the water you’re drinking while supporting hydration, energy, muscle function, and overall well-being.
When your body is properly hydrated, digestion often improves, energy increases, and many women find they actually retain less water—not more.
Take a 30 Minute Walk
You don’t need complicated workouts to start seeing changes.
A daily walk is one of the best things you can do for your metabolism, hormones, mood, and overall health.
Walking improves insulin sensitivity, supports circulation, reduces stress hormones, and encourages your body to use stored energy more efficiently. It also gives you an opportunity to get outside, soak up some sunshine, and clear your mind.
If you’re just getting started, don’t overthink it. Lace up your shoes and head out for a daily walk.
Cut Back on Sugar
If your goal is to feel lean, confident, and comfortable in your swimsuit, reducing sugar is one of the most powerful changes you can make.
Excess sugar can lead to blood sugar spikes, increases cravings, can cause inflammation, and create water retention—all of which can leave you feeling bloated, sluggish, and exhausted!
Simply by replacing sugary snacks and desserts with balanced meals made from real food can help stabilize your energy, reduce cravings, and help your body feel lighter and less inflamed. Many women are surprised by how much flatter their stomach feels and how much more comfortable they are in their clothes after just a week or two of eating this way.
